Bitcoin Surges Past $86,000, Erasing Months of Losses

Bitcoin climbed above $86,000 this week, capping a dramatic recovery from a 21-month low near $58,000 set in late June.

Bitcoin opened at roughly $86,600 on September 22, 2026, up more than 6% on the day and about 10% over the past week, according to market data. The move caps a sharp recovery: the asset had fallen to a 21-month low of around $58,000 in late June before climbing back above $80,000 by late August.

What’s driving the rally

Traders and analysts point to two main tailwinds: continued inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs and easing bond yields, which have made risk assets more attractive relative to fixed income. Ethereum has moved in tandem, trading near $2,630 as of this week.

The rally also comes as institutional players deepen their involvement in digital assets. Deutsche Bank has said it plans to offer Bitcoin and digital-asset custody services to European institutional clients by the end of 2026, while U.S. stablecoin infrastructure firm Bastion recently received approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to apply for a national trust bank charter.

What to watch next

With Bitcoin back near levels last seen in January, attention now turns to whether ETF inflows can sustain the move, and to a busy regulatory calendar in Washington that could shape sentiment in the weeks ahead (see our coverage of the CLARITY Act vote).
