Seed Phrase Backup Checklist: Is Your Recovery Phrase Safe?

Your recovery phrase (also called a seed phrase) is the master key to your crypto. Anyone who has it can take everything, and if you lose it and your wallet fails, your funds can be gone for good. Use this checklist to score your backup and find the gaps worth fixing first.

Never type, photograph, or upload your recovery phrase anywhere. This checklist does not ask for it and collects nothing. It runs entirely in your browser, and your ticks are not saved or sent anywhere.

Why these items matter

  • Digital copies are the biggest leak. Photos, screenshots, notes apps, and cloud drives can be reached by malware or anyone who breaks into the account.
  • Scammers ask for your phrase. Fake support agents, fake wallet apps, and fake "validation" sites all try to get it. Nobody legitimate ever needs it.
  • One copy is one disaster away from zero. Fire, flood, and theft happen. A second copy in another place and a metal backup cover the common cases.
  • An untested backup is a guess. A small recovery test proves the backup works before you trust it with real money.

Gear that helps

Metal backup plates survive fire and flooding that destroy paper. Popular options include the Billfodl, the Cryptosteel Capsule, and the Cryptotag Zeus. A fireproof safe and tamper-evident bags add protection for the place you store them. Check current prices on Amazon.

Frequently asked questions

What is a seed phrase?

It is a list of 12 or 24 words generated by your wallet that can restore all of your accounts on a new device. Whoever holds the words controls the funds.

Is it safe to keep my seed phrase in a password manager?

Most security guidance says no. Any digital copy can be exposed if the account or device is compromised. For most people an offline copy on metal or paper is safer.

What should I do if someone might have seen my phrase?

Create a brand-new wallet with a new phrase on a trusted device and move your funds there right away. The old phrase should be considered compromised.

Should I add a passphrase?

A passphrase adds protection but also adds a second thing you can lose. If you use one, back it up separately from the phrase and test the recovery.
