Bitcoin Stuck Between $83K and $85K as Traders Weigh the Fed’s Next Move

Bitcoin spent the week trapped in a tight $83,000-$85,000 band as markets priced in more Fed tightening, while DeFi tokens like Aerodrome and Ethena led a broad altcoin bounce.

Bitcoin went into the weekend of September 26 doing what it has done all week: very little. The largest cryptocurrency traded at about $84,000 on Saturday, down less than 1% over 24 hours according to CoinDesk and Coinbase price data. For most of the week it stayed inside a narrow band between roughly $83,000 and $85,000, and neither buyers nor sellers have taken control.

The quiet comes after a busy few weeks for macro news. Earlier this week Bitcoin was turned away near $87,000 and fell back to the mid-$80,000s as traders repriced the Federal Reserve’s path. Now the market seems to be waiting for its next catalyst.

The Fed Is Back in Tightening Mode

The main backdrop is monetary policy. At its latest meeting the Fed raised its policy rate by 25 basis points to a 3.75%-4.00% range in a unanimous vote. It was the central bank’s first hike since 2023. Since then, futures markets have leaned toward more tightening. Fed funds futures recently put the odds of another hike in October at about 70%, up from below 50% the week before, according to market coverage citing futures pricing.

Some large banks think that pricing goes too far. UBS’s Chief Investment Office said on September 24 that markets may be overpricing how fast the Fed will keep tightening. Its base case is one more hike in December, then a pause through 2027. The Fed’s own median dot plot projection held at 4.1% for both 2026 and 2027.

For crypto, the details matter. Higher rates usually make riskier assets less attractive. The gap between what futures imply and what forecasters like UBS expect is one reason Bitcoin keeps stalling below the top of its range. Economic data has also run hot. September’s composite PMI came in at 58.4, one of the strongest private-sector readings in months, which supports the case for tighter policy.

Sentiment Is Upbeat Even Though Price Isn’t Moving

Price is flat, but sentiment is not gloomy. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index stood at 74 (“Greed”) on Saturday. Total crypto market capitalization was reported at roughly $2.9-$3.0 trillion, depending on the data provider. Bitcoin’s market cap was about $1.69 trillion, and its dominance was in the mid-to-high 50% range.

Ethereum was also quiet, trading around $2,690 with a market cap near $328 billion and down only a fraction of a percent on the day. The stablecoin market held steady at about $292.5 billion, so there is plenty of dry powder on the sidelines but no rush to use it.

Altcoins and DeFi Take the Spotlight

Bitcoin was flat, but more happened further down the market. CoinCodex’s daily market update said about 91% of tracked coins gained over 24 hours. Aerodrome Finance (AERO), the main decentralized exchange on Coinbase’s Base network, rose more than 25% to about $0.93. Ethena (ENA) gained about 21%, and Sei was also among the leaders.

DeFi as a whole had a good day. The DeFi sector’s market cap rose about 3% to roughly $87.7 billion. Some of that attention probably came from Aave’s launch of an equities market on Base on Friday, which lets eligible non-U.S. users borrow USDC against Coinbase-issued tokenized stocks.

Other headlines added to the mixed mood:

  • Bitget: Estimates of assets stolen in the recent exchange hack were revised to about $387.5 million after previously unaccounted Zcash and TRON holdings were added.
  • Cosmos Hub: About 1.27 million ATOM stolen in a governance attack involving Neutron were reported recovered.
  • LayerZero: The interoperability protocol said it will end off-chain DVN and Executor support for 13 low-activity chains on September 30, including Aurora, Gnosis, Taiko, Zora and opBNB. Users holding bridged assets on those networks were told to move them.

What to Watch Next

With Bitcoin pinned in a $2,000 range, traders are watching which side breaks first. A clean move above the $85,000-$87,000 zone would show that buyers have absorbed the hawkish repricing. A break below $83,000 would suggest the rate outlook is winning. Some technical analysts have pointed to the 200-day moving average as a possible level to revisit if weakness continues.

The next inflation readings and any Fed speeches before the October meeting will likely drive direction. Until then, altcoin and DeFi rotations may keep producing more action than Bitcoin itself.
